In the Late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the most common clocks found in the average home were one of three different clock styles….   A Black Square Mantel, a Tambour (or over-the-hill) and the Gingerbread Kitchen Clock.

Below is an example of a Gingerbread Kitchen Clock.  Having a very Gingerbread cut look of the wood explains that name.  The Kitchen Clock name came from the fact that back then, clocks were not I your car and in every room like they are today….  You were fortunate if your family had one clock back then and that clock was usually kept in the gathering place of the house, the kitchen, thus the name—Gingerbread KITCHEN clock.  Sometimes these clocks even had alarms.

If you are a clock collector, you know some basic principles of a clock.   ONE area to wind the clock, one winding arbor usually means TIME ONLY.  TWO winding arbors usually means Time & Strike,  this means that the clock may possibly strike one time on the half hour (not always) and then strikes whatever hour it is at the hour.  THREE winding arbors usually means Westminster chimes every 15 minutes, or triple chime.  The key word however is, USUALLY!  The rule is broken once in a while with rare clocks which have two winding arbors but are called “One Quarter Strike” clocks, or “One Quarter Strike Bim Bams”.   There are other derivatives of the unusual but that can get quite deep for this quick paragraph.   If you have one of these More Unique Pieces, well….  This is a wonderful thing.  Throughout our web pages, we have a few very unusual pieces…  if you don’t find them, please call, we will point them out to you.

Sometimes companies would COLLABERATE together to create a Beauty as in this piece below where Seth Thomas coupled together with the Southern Calendar Clock Company in St. Louis, Missouri.   With this combination came the Fashion Double Dial Calendar Clock.   What a beauty this is.  This clock even has the original finials.   In this piece, the time and bell strike portion of the clock work I conjunction with the lower portion Calendar Movement…  giving you the day, date, month, and minute/hour…..  WOW!  This was pretty awesome for the mid-to late1800’s.   If you happen to own one of these clocks, well…  hey….  You obviously know your clocks.   They are quite the collectable piece and very much sort after.   Ithaca was also a big maker of these kinds of clocks too.
